4 ways to improve your CSA Scores

What is CSA?- and how does it affect me?

CSA stands for Compliance, Safety, Accountability. It is the safety compliance and enforcement program of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that holds motor carriers and drivers accountable for their role in safety.

CSA affects motor carriers, including owner-operators, by identifying those with safety
problems to prioritize them for interventions such as warning letters and investigations.
CSA affects drivers because their safety performance and compliance impact their
safety records and, while working for a carrier, will impact their carrier’s safety record.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) uses seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories—BASICs—to determine a motor carrier’s safety performance and compliance relative to other carriers. Five BASICs are publicly available online in the Safety Measurement System (SMS).

Here are the seven BASICs of safety:

The SMS considers:
• The number of safety violations and inspections
• The severity of safety violations or crashes
• When the safety violations occurred, with recent events weighted more heavily
• The number of trucks/buses a carrier operates and the number of vehicle miles traveled
• Acute and Critical Violations found during investigations

How can I improve my CSA Scores?

FleetMetriks offers solutions to monitor four of the seven categories that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) uses to determine a motor carrier’s safety performance and compliance. With these solutions, you are able to get the data, analyze, and correct any issues before it is reported by the CSA, thus improving your overall scores.

Use the Driver Score App

The Easy Driver Score solution uses sensor data from the Syrus devices connected to your vehicles to score your driver’s performance. It analyzes dozens of metrics like average trip speeds, harsh braking, and gas efficiency and visually displays them at your convenience in a user-friendly dashboard. You can use this information to evaluate the top performance, while also training and educating drivers.

Crash Indicator

According to the FMCSA state-reported crashes from the last two years are collected to help identify patterns of high crash involvement and the behaviors or set of behaviors that contributed to the crash. Crashes involving commercial motor vehicles, as defined in 49 CFR 390.5, are reportable if they result in a fatality or injury, or require a vehicle to be transported from the crash scene, regardless of the carrier or driver’s role in the crash. You can help reduce risks of accidents by using our tools designed for road safety such as ADAS System, fatigue detector, and dash cams.

ELD Compliance

Address compliance requirements and ensure driver alertness with our ELD Solution. Our HOS (Hours of Service) app, alerts drivers of their driving time, helping them avoid violations. The ELD web application help carry download violation reports and keeps up to date with the driving behaviors of the drivers.

Vehicle Maintenance

Ensure safety on the road. With our pre-inspection forms, drivers can report possible mechanical issues that could spell risk while on the road. Also with our powerful automation tool, you will receive periodic service alerts so that you never forget crucial maintenance milestones.
